Husbandry requirements

Schneider's Smooth-fronted Caiman — origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America (Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia). Occupies mainly small, cool, shaded, fast-flowing forest streams, often away from large bodies of water, with more terrestrial habits than other caimans..

Terrarium temperature gradient

Night min22 °C
Cool side24–26 °C
Warm side28–30 °C
Basking spot32–35 °C

A species of cool forest waters, tolerating and preferring lower temperatures than most crocodilians (among the lowest body temperatures of the group). Provide a basking spot at 32-35 °C above the bank, a temperate ambient-air zone and cool water at 24-26 °C. Avoid any overheating. A thermal gradient is essential.

Enclosure (adult)
400 × 200 × 120 cm

Custom-built, very large-volume paludarium / semi-aquatic installation (indoor-pool type with a land bank)

Indicative minimum dimensions for an adult: aim for a length of at least 2 to 3 times that of the animal. Must include a large deep water area AND a spacious dry land bank (a more terrestrial species than other caimans). Sturdy, completely escape-proof structure with smooth walls to limit snout abrasions. Not suitable for a commercial aquarium or terrarium. PROTECTED SPECIES: listed on CITES Appendix II (EU Annex B); keeping and transfer are subject to strict documentation and regulation.

Humidity
70–95 %

High humidity naturally provided by the large water surface. Good ventilation needed to avoid stagnant air and respiratory infections.

Substrate
Large water area (main part)Dry land bank of topsoil/forest soilBark and dead-leaf litterAreas of sand or smooth pebblesSturdy hides and immersion supports

The bank substrate kept clean and non-abrasive; avoid sharp or ingestible materials. The aquatic part dominates the layout, but an accessible dry bank is essential for this semi-terrestrial species.

UVB
Recommended

UVB recommended despite the forest habits: T5 HO 5-6% tube above the basking area, replaced as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Promotes vitamin D3 synthesis and bone mineralisation. To be supplemented with strong lighting and a regular photoperiod.

Water source
Always available

A large, clean, filtered body of water, deep enough for full immersion, kept cool (24-26 °C). Powerful filtration and regular water changes are essential: this species defecates in the water and poor quality quickly leads to dermatitis. Provide easy exits/access banks.

Feeding & health

Diet

Carnivore (whole prey) — Whole fish, rodents (rats, mice), and terrestrial vertebrate prey; occasionally chicks. In the wild, a significant proportion of terrestrial prey (rodents, pacas, porcupines) in addition to fish.

Feed whole prey for the calcium/bone intake. Spaced-out rations adapted to age (young more frequently, adults more rarely): overfeeding quickly leads to obesity. Avoid thiaminase-rich fish given alone exclusively.

Breeding
Oviparous

Clutch 10–20 eggs/young. Builds a mound nest (decomposing vegetation), frequently associated with termite mounds that provide stable incubation heat. Long incubation (about 90-115 days) with temperature-dependent sex determination. Captive breeding is rare and restricted to specialised facilities.

Health watch points
  • Osteofibrosis / metabolic bone disease (calcium/D3 deficiency, insufficient UVB)
  • Obesity linked to overfeeding
  • Snout abrasions and lesions (rubbing against the walls)
  • Dermatitis and bacterial or fungal skin infections (poor water quality)
  • Respiratory infections (temperatures too low, stagnant air)

    Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about keeping the schneider's smooth-fronted caiman.

How big does an adult Schneider's Smooth-fronted Caiman get?
An adult Schneider's Smooth-fronted Caiman typically measures 1.2–2 m (total length (snout to tip of tail). males: 140-170 cm, rarely 200 cm and over; females: 120-140 cm. larger than cuvier's dwarf caiman (p. palpebrosus). slow growth.).
What temperature and humidity does a Schneider's Smooth-fronted Caiman need?
A gradient of roughly 24–26 °C on the cool side to 28–30 °C on the warm side, with a basking spot of 32–35 °C. Humidity 70–95 %.
    What does a Schneider's Smooth-fronted Caiman eat?
Carnivore (whole prey): Whole fish, rodents (rats, mice), and terrestrial vertebrate prey; occasionally chicks. In the wild, a significant proportion of terrestrial prey (rodents, pacas, porcupines) in addition to fish..
Is the Schneider's Smooth-fronted Caiman a good reptile for beginners?
Expert level. A powerful, nervous and defensive crocodilian, often more aggressive than Cuvier's dwarf caiman. Dangerous bite and a heavily ossified, keeled and extremely powerful tail that can cause serious injury. It is not handled like a lizard: any intervention requires restraint, proper equipment and experienced people. WARNING: potentially dangerous animal whose keeping is regulated (in France, a non-domestic species requiring a certificate of competence and an establishment-opening permit). Not advised outside a professional or zoological setting. Plan ahead: a lifespan of 25–50 yrs.
