Husbandry requirements

African Rock Python — origin: Sub-Saharan Africa (West, Central and East Africa). Savannas, grasslands, open woodland and scrubland, almost always near permanent water sources..

Terrarium temperature gradient

Night min24 °C
Cool side26–28 °C
Warm side30–32 °C
Basking spot32–34 °C

Maintain a clear thermal gradient. Hot spot/warm resting area at 32-34°C, cool side 26-28°C. Night: not below 22-24°C. Always use thermostats and shield every heat source (mesh/cage) to prevent thermal burns, which are common in large pythons.

Enclosure (adult)
300 × 150 × 120 cm

Very large custom-built enclosure/terrarium, sturdy, heated and fully secured (lockable closures). A standard commercial vivarium is inadequate for an adult.

Minimum dimensions for an adult; larger is always better. Provide sturdy hides on both sides of the thermal gradient and a large water tub. CAUTION: a species potentially dangerous to humans and often subject to local regulations (keeping of dangerous animals, declaration/permit). Python sebae is listed on CITES Appendix II (EU Annex B): check legal obligations before any acquisition.

Humidity
50–70 %

Moderate humidity (savanna). Aim for 50-60% ambient, with occasional peaks toward 70% and a humid hide during sheds. Excessively high, stagnant humidity promotes dermatitis and respiratory infections; ensure good ventilation.

Substrate
Cypress mulchCoconut fibreOrchid bark / soil mixNewspaper or thick paper towel (hygienic and practical for large specimens)

Choose a substrate that maintains moderate humidity without staying soaked. Remove droppings and soiled areas immediately. For large adults, paper makes cleaning and health monitoring easier.

UVB
Optional

Not strictly essential (nocturnal/crepuscular species), but low to moderate UVB (Ferguson zone 1-2, UV index ~1-2) is beneficial for metabolism and well-being. Provide a regular day/night photoperiod (12h). Lamp shielded and out of direct reach.

Water source
Always available

Large, heavy and sturdy water tub, big enough to let the snake submerge fully (a semi-aquatic species and good swimmer). Clean water changed regularly; the tub also serves as a hydration area during sheds.

Feeding & health

Diet

Carnivore (mainly mammals) — Rodents, then prey of increasing size according to the snake (rats, rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs). Thawed prey recommended.

An opportunistic and powerful predator; in the wild it eats antelopes, warthogs, primates, large birds and sometimes crocodiles. In captivity, use prey with a diameter close to the widest part of the body. Space out meals (adults: every 2-4 weeks or more) to avoid obesity; ban power feeding. Feed a large specimen safely, ideally with two people, using a hook and a clear separation of feeding from handling.

Breeding
Oviparous

Clutch 20–100 eggs/young. Massive clutches, often 20 to 50 eggs, up to ~100 in very large females. The female coils around and broods the clutch; incubation ~28-32°C for about 80-90 days. Breeding is not advised outside specialized facilities given the size and temperament of the species.

Health watch points
  • Respiratory infections (environment too cold, too humid or poorly ventilated)
  • Mite infestation (Ophionyssus natricis)
  • Dermatitis / scale rot linked to a wet or soiled substrate
  • Stomatitis (mouth rot)
  • Obesity and digestive problems from overfeeding; thermal burns on unshielded heat sources

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about keeping the african rock python.

How big does an adult African Rock Python get?
An adult African Rock Python typically measures 3–5 m (giant snake, adult total length typically 3.0 to 5.0 m; documented record over 6.0 m. massive, heavily muscled and heavy body. females are generally larger than males.).
What temperature and humidity does a African Rock Python need?
A gradient of roughly 26–28 °C on the cool side to 30–32 °C on the warm side, with a basking spot of 32–34 °C. Humidity 50–70 %.
What does a African Rock Python eat?
Carnivore (mainly mammals): Rodents, then prey of increasing size according to the snake (rats, rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs). Thawed prey recommended..
Is the African Rock Python a good reptile for beginners?
Expert level. Notoriously defensive and reactive. Unlike the Burmese python, the African rock python often retains a nervous, high-strung temperament even as an adult. Bites are severe (long recurved teeth) and the animal has considerable muscular power capable of seriously injuring an adult human. Handling is reserved for very experienced keepers, never alone for a large specimen. Plan ahead: a lifespan of 20–30 yrs.
